Almod\u00f3var had a press conference on Wednesday, May 20, for his new movie. During the press conference, he was asked about \u201cHollywood being in crisis and Canal+ threatening creators.\u201d The journalist was referring to the current controversy with Canal+, a French channel and media conglomerate, where the company\u2019s Chair and CEO Maxime Saada said they would not work with anyone who signed the petition against billionaire Vincent Bollor\u00e9 (a main shareholder of Canal +) accusing him of spearheading a far-right \u201ccivilizational project.\u201dAlmod\u00f3var took the moment to address the journalist\u2019s question while also blasting Trump. Other creatives at Cannes have slammed Trump, specifically Javier Bardem who criticized him, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Russian President Vladimir Putin for their \u201cmale toxic behavior.\u201dDonald Trump dubbed a \u2018buffoon\u2019 as he sparks health fears with latest \u2018dumb\u2019 comment<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Almod\u00f3var began by first noting how censorship \u201cdoes affect us a lot\u201d but urged artist to still raise their voices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI don\u2019t want to judge anyone, but I think artists have to speak out about the situation in which they live in contemporary society. It\u2019s a moral duty,\u201d Almod\u00f3var said per Variety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSilence and fear is a symptom that things are going badly. It\u2019s a serious sign democracy is crumbling. On the contrary, creators must speak out\u2026 the worst thing that could happen would be to remain silent or to be censored. We have a moral obligation to speak out,\u201d he continued.The screenwriter added, \u201cEurope must never be subjected to Trump,\u201d to which he received thunderous applause from the room of international press<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is not the first time Almod\u00f3var has publicly slammed the 79-year-old US president. In May 2025, he accepted the Chaplin Award at Lincoln Center in New York City and he said in his speech that he had doubted if it was \u201cappropriate\u201d to come to America, which is \u201cruled by a narcissistic authority, who doesn\u2019t respect human rights.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Later in his speech, he asserted that Trump \u201cwill go down in history as a catastrophe.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Almod\u00f3var has never shied away from speaking his mind and talking about global issues. He even displayed a Free Palestine pin on his jacket at the Cannes press conference. In his recent interview with Los Angeles Times, Almod\u00f3var expressed that he doesn\u2019t \u201chave many fears\u201d when it comes to speaking up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI don\u2019t have many fears. In a generalized Spanish sense, here we\u2019re not afraid to call things for what they are. We have a government that has called Gaza a genocide and the Spanish people in general are not afraid to call these wars out for what they are,\u201d he told the outlet.<\/p>
